“I THINK THAT THE INTERPRETATION OF REALITY IS AN INNER ESSENTIAL QUALITY OF HUMAN BEINGS, AND PROBABLY OF OTHER FORMAS OF EXISTENCE THAT I CANNOT CONFIRM FOR THE OBVIOUS REASON THAT I AM NOT A FISH. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT MEMORY IS A PARCIAL SETTLEMENT WITH THE REAL”
Juan Miguel Pozo was born in Holguín, Cuba, and lives and works between Berlin and Havana. Starting his artistic education in Cuba, he found his own work methodology while studying in Germany. He was connected to the Leipzig School of Art and to the LIGA group, which had formal and narrative reference directly linked to the socialist experience of East Germany. This was familiar to him, not from the political-ideological point of view, but in respect to the aesthetic sensibility he found in the architecture, propaganda, music, and the uncertain and vital alternative in both the “democratic” Germany and the “revolutionary” island. He has systematised all this information by means of figurative pictorial structures of vast dimensions describing the past and future at the same time, in an act of avoidance of any type of obvious local-colour, be it too cold or too tropical.
